Notes & Slides for "Creating Pleasurable Interfaces" Presentation
Posted Tuesday November 21, 2006
I’ve spent the last several weeks preparing for and presenting my thoughts on pleasurable interfaces – first at Refresh Dallas and then at the Refresh06 conference in Florida.
A special thanks to everyone who made it out to either of these events. As was probably evident, this is a topic I’m somewhat passionate about. And, as is true of any subject dealing with emotions, beauty or pleasure, this is a rich and somewhat subjective discussion.
My User Experience Hierarchy of Needs model forms the skeleton of my presentation. Think of it as ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ except for interfaces.
The slides for the ‘Creating Pleasurable Interfaces’ (12M pdf file… right click and ‘save as…’) go along with the one pager, offering practical examples of what the model describes.
What I’ve tried to do here is bridge a lot of really fascinating academic ideas with practical examples or application ideas. The model is something I’ve created to make sense of the conversations and ideas already in existence. I’m planning to post more on this—and some of the specific slides—as time permits.
Until then… Enjoy!

Stephen: This makes me wish I’d seen the presentation in person. Even just reading the slides, I can tell it was a great one. I loved the funny Southwest Airlines quotes!
